The Elves and the Shoemaker         Digital Music Book of Guitar Chords here!           Listen here!

Once there was a poor shoemaker and his lovely wife
They had worked so hard through their entire life
But they had such trouble just making ends meet
Who knew it could be so hard making shoes for feet.

With his last scrap of leather
He cut out a shoe
And laid it on the table
In the morning for to do

As they lay, in their bed
The poor shoemaker said
I don’t know what we’ll do
If I can’t sell this shoe

Late that night, while they slept
In their door two elves crept
Those elves worked and sang too
As they finished that shoe

La la la, La la li,
La la li, La la loo,
We will help the poor shoemaker
And his wife too.

When the morning light broke
The poor shoemaker woke
And he saw a fine shoe
It seemed too good to be true

In the door, came a man
And he had a fine plan
I’d like to buy that shoe
And here, double I’ll pay you.

With the money he made
The poor shoemaker paid
For some leather for a shoe
And enough for one more too

With his two scraps of leather
He cut out two shoes
And laid them on the table
In the morning for to do

As they lay, in their bed
The poor shoemaker said
I don’t know what we’ll do
If I can’t sell these shoes

Late that night, while they slept
In their door two elves crept
Those elves worked and sang too
As they finished those shoes

La la la, La la li,
La la li, La la loo,
We will help the poor shoemaker
And his wife too.

When the morning light broke
The poor shoemaker woke
And he saw two fine shoes
They seemed too good to be true

In the door, came a man
And he had a fine plan
I’d like to buy those shoes
And here, double I’ll pay you.

With the money he made
The poor shoemaker paid
For some leather for a shoe
And enough for three more too

With his four scraps of leather
He cut out four shoes
And laid them on the table
In the morning for to do

To his wife, then he said
Let us not go to bed
Let us hide and peek through
And see who made this shoe.

Late that night, while they hid
In their door two elves slid
Those elves worked and sang too
As they finished those shoes

La la la, La la li,
La la li, La la loo,
We will help the poor shoemaker
And his wife too.

When the elves then had gone
It was just about dawn
The shoemaker said
We’ll repay them with thread.

So they worked
All day long
And they sang the elves song
La la la li la loo
While they made them clothes and shoes.

At the end of the day
On the table there lay
Two elf outfits in blue
And two pairs of shoes too.

Late that night while they hid
In the door two elves slid
They both widened their eyes
When they saw their surprise.

La la la, La la li,
La la li, La la loo
We give thanks to the shoemaker
And his wife too.

Then they danced in the street
With new shoes on their feet.
And the shoemaker and wife
Lived a very fine life.
